Wisdom from Jesse Livermore, Greatest Trader Ever

Bookmark and Share
In the early part of the 20th century, Jesse Livermore was the most successful (and most feared) stock trader on Wall Street. He called the stock market crash of 1907 and once made $3 million in a single day. In 1929, Livermore went short several stocks and made $100 million. He was blamed for the stock market crash that year, and solidified his nickname, "The Boy Plunger." Livermore was also a successful commodities trader. I think the most valuable knowledge one can gain regarding trading and markets comes from studying market history, and studying the methods of successful traders of the past. Jesse Livermore and Richard Wyckoff are two of the most famous and successful traders of the first half of the 20th century. Many of the most successful traders of today have patterned their trading styles after those of the great traders of the past. Here are some valuable nuggets I have gleaned from the book, "How to Trade Stocks," by Jesse Livermore, with added material from Richard Smitten. It's published by Traders Press and is available at Amazon.com. Most of the nuggets below are direct quotes from Livermore, himself.
 "All through time, people have basically acted and reacted the same way in the market as a result of: greed, fear, ignorance, and hope. That is why the numerical (technical) formations and patterns recur on a constant basis."
 "The game of speculation is the most uniformly fascinating game in the world. But it is not a game for the stupid, the mentally lazy, the person of inferior emotional balance, or the get-rich-quick adventurer. They will die poor."
 Don't take action with a trade until the market, itself, confirms your opinion. Being a little late in a trade is insurance that your opinion is correct. In other words, don't be an impatient trader.
 Livermore's money made in speculation came from "commitments in a stock or commodity showing a profit right from the start." Don't hang on to a losing position for very long."It is foolhardy to make a second trade, if your first trade shows you a loss. Never average losses. Let this thought be written indelibly upon your mind."
 "Remember this: When you are doing nothing, those speculators who feel they must trade day in and day out, are laying the foundation for your next venture. You will reap benefits from their mistakes."
 "When a margin call reaches you, close your account. Never meet a margin call. You are on the wrong side of a market. Why send good money after bad? Keep that good money for another day."
 Livermore coined what he called "Pivotal Points" in a market or a stock. Basically, they were: (1) Price levels at which the stock or market reversed course previously-- in other words, previous major tops or bottoms; and (2) psychological price levels such as 50 or 100, 200, etc. He would buy a stock or commodity that saw a price breakout above the Pivotal Point, and sell a stock or commodity that saw a price breakout below a Pivotal Point.
 "Successful traders always follow the line of least resistance. Follow the trend. The trend is your friend."
 A prudent speculator never argues with the tape. Markets are never wrong-- opinions often are.
 Few people succeed in the market because they have no patience. They have a strong desire to get rich quickly.
 "I absolutely believe that price movement patterns are being repeated. They are recurring patterns that appear over and over, with slight variations. This is because markets are driven by humans -- and human nature never changes."
 When you make a trade, "you should have a clear target where to sell if the market moves against you. And you must obey your rules! Never sustain a loss of more than 10% of your capital. Losses are twice as expensive to make up. I always established a stop before making a trade."
 "I am fully aware that of the millions of people who speculate in the markets, few people spend full time involved in the art of speculation. Yet, as far as I'm concerned it is a full-time job -- perhaps even more than a job. Perhaps it is a vocation, where many are called but few are singled out for success."

 "The big money is made by the sittin' and the waitin' -- not the thinking. Wait until all the factors are in your favor before making the trade." An important point I want to make is that Jesse Livermore's trading success came not because of any "inside" information or some huge store of knowledge he had about each and every stock or commodities market he traded. Livermore's trading success was derived from his understanding of human behavior. He realized early on that markets and stocks can and do change -- but people and their behaviors do not. Therein lay his formula for trading success. That formula for trading success has not changed since Livermore's hey day in the stock and commodities markets almost a century ago. A final note: Jesse Livermore may have been called the greatest stock market trader of the 20th century, but I question that notion. Certainly, no one can disagree that his profits were immense and his trading prowess was unmatched. But his life was not in balance. He was a "workaholic" who paid too little attention to his family. Livermore put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger in 1940. He"crashed and burned." You must have balance in your life to achieve lasting success at any endeavor. Trading markets is no exception.

The dhol is a double-sided barrel drum (straight barrels also exist) played mostly as an accompanying instrument in regional music forms. In Qawwali music, the term dhol is used to describe a similar, but smaller drum used with the smaller tabla, as a replacement for the left hand tabla drum.

The dhol is most commonly associated with Punjabi music and dance. It was used in war by the Sikhs and later to celebrate successful harvests by Jatt landowners. This drum became the ground roots of modern Bhangra music.
From North India, the Dhol spread to other parts of the Indian subcontinent as well.

The most beautiful four-door car in the world - Rapide Fire

Maker Aston Martin calls the Rapid the most beautiful four-door car in the world.'The Rapide is a sports car', says Ulrich Bez, the chief executive of Aston Martin. Normally, he wouldn't feel the need for such emphasis: expensive, hand-crafted British sports cars are Aston's business. But the £140,000 Rapide is something new, the company's first four-door, four-seater car since the Lagonda of the 1970s. Bez doesn't want this car to be misunderstood. It is not a rival for the Bentley Continental Flying Spur or the uber-sedans from Mercedes, BMW and Audi and it differs fundamentally from its most obvious counterpart, the Porsche Panamera.

As Aston sees it, the Porsche was designed as a low-line car providing generous space for four adults and the body was shaped accordingly, hence its hump-backed look; the Rapide is an Aston Martin DB9 with more room for people and luggage but no compromise to its gorgeous, flowing style. Bez describes the Rapide as "the most beautiful four-door car in the world" and adds: "The proportions had to be perfect. If we couldn't have achieved this, we wouldn't have made it." So this is not a car for the part-time driver who likes to conduct business from the back seat. Neither is it suitable for making the grand entrance at a film premiere or society ball for a skirted lady (or a Scotsman) in context of modesty while emerging from the back.

Apple chief Steve Jobs unveils iPhone 4

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs on Monday unveiled the "iPhone 4," the latest touchscreen smartphone from the California gadget maker.

"We are going to take the biggest leap since the original iPhone," Jobs said in a keynote speech at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at San Fransisco.

Jobs said the iPhone 4 includes more than 100 new features including a front-facing video camera to allow for video-conferencing, a better still camera, improved battery life and a screen with higher resolution.

"There has never been a display like this on a phone," Jobs said.

The 3.5-inch screen is the same size as on previous models but features 326 pixels per inch, four times more pixels than the earlier iPhones.

"There is a magic number around 300 pixels per inch that is the limit of the human retina," Jobs said. "We are over that limit."

"That's going to set the standard for display for years to come," he said.

The improved battery allows for 40 percent more talk time, Jobs said.

He also said the iPhone is 24 percent thinner than the previous model, iPhone 3GS.

"It is really thin," Jobs. "It is one of the most beautiful designs you've ever seen. Its closest kin is a beautiful old Leica camera."

The Apple chief executive also joked that some of the attendees may have seen the phone previously "because there are have been a few photos around."

Technology blog Gizmodo obtained a prototype of the phone in April from a 21-year-old man who found it in a California beer garden, where it had been lost by an Apple software engineer.

If only X-Ray glasses existed!

X-Ray Specs consist of an outsized pair of glasses with plastic frames and white cardboard "lenses" printed with concentric red circles, and emblazoned with the legend "X-RAY VISION".

The lenses consist of two layers of cardboard with a small hole about 6 mm (.25 inch) in diameter punched through both layers. The user views objects through the holes. A feather is embedded between the layers of each lens.
X-Ray Specs were long advertised with the slogan "See the bones in your hand, see through clothes!" Some versions of the advertisement featured an illustration of a young man using the X-Ray Specs to examine the bones in his hand while a voluptuous (but fully-dressed) woman stood in the background, as though awaiting her turn to be "X-rayed."

Uniquely adapted for climbing and visual hunting, the approximately 160 species of chameleon range from Africa, Madagascar, Spain and Portugal, across south Asia, to Sri Lanka, have been introduced to Hawaii, California and Florida, and are found in warm habitats that vary from rain forest to desert conditions.

Chameleons (family Chamaeleonidae) are a distinctive and highly specialized clade of lizards. They are distinguished by their parrot-like zygodactylous feet, their separately mobile and stereoscopic eyes, their very long, highly modified, and rapidly extrudable tongues, their swaying gait, the possession by many of a prehensile tail, crests or horns on their distinctively shaped heads, and the ability of some to change color.

The mobile number that rang the death knell

The Bulgarian mobile phone number - 0888 888 888 - has been suspended after every person who used it in the past 10 years died. The last man to own it was gunned down outside an Indian restaurant in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
Vladimir Grashnov, former CEO of Bulgarian mobile phone company Mobitel, was the first user and he died of cancer in 2001. He was 48.

The number was then assigned to Bulgarian mafia boss Konstantin Dimitrov. He was shot dead down in 2003 in the Netherlands. He was 31.

Dimitrov had the mobile phone with him when he was shot while eating out with a model, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The exclusive number then passed on to businessman Konstantin Dishliev who was shot dead outside an Indian restaurant in Sofia in 2005. Dishliev had been running a cocaine trafficking operation before he was killed.

The phone number has now been suspended. Callers get to hear the message that the phone is outside network coverage.

A Mobitel spokesperson said: 'We have no comment to make. We won't discuss individual numbers.'

Is Windows a Virus...?

Bookmark and Share
No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:

1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.

5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus. It's a bug.
